Workforce Training

When it comes to training, employers have access to dollars to help train new and existing employees.

The Governors Office of Economic Development can provide assistance to help develop workforce. Applications are available at www.sdreadytowork.com/Financing-Incentives/Workforce-Development.aspx

The Attract and Enhance Program is offered locally in Watertown and provides matching funds for the following incentives:

  • Relocation Expenses for new employees.
  • Tuition reimbursement for trailing spouses or immediate household members of employees new to Watertown that are either starting or continuing their studies at an institution in the Watertown area.
  • Scholarships or tuition reimbursement for training and/or “upskilling” of current employees.

  • The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is an employment and training program offered through the SD Department of Labor and is designed to provide services that will increase skills for adults and youth, which will result in employment and an increase in earnings. WIA offers education and job training programs that can help in overcoming barriers to employment. More information is available at www.dlr.sd.gov/workforce_training/wia.aspx
  • Internships area a great way to help fill temporary workforce needs and establish a pipeline for permanent employees. Interships also enhance a student’s education by providing work experience in their chosen career pathway. The Dakota Seeds Program can provide 50% of an intern’s wages with a maximum of $2,000 per intern. Internships must relate to a high need industry sector. Some of the benefits Watertown offers companies includes technical training and advanced training in the skills necessary for business management, manufacturing and technical skills.

Lake Area Technical Institute, recently named one of the top three best two-year colleges in the nation, not only provides skilled labor training for the future workforce, but also works with the business community to provide continuing education and training. Every year hundreds of businesses and individuals take advantage of their Adult/Community Education classes, flexible on-line courses and customized industry training classes. Businesses are able to offer their employees the skills they need to perform: many corporate partners of Lake Area Tech have realized lower costs of production, less turnover, and higher profits by investing in their most valuable asset – their employees.

Lake Area Tech offers a variety of training programs to fit any business need. Industry training has included:

  • Computer seminars
  • Electrical code classes
  • Commercial driver’s licensing
  • Forklift certifications
  • Supervisor training
  • Welding technique
  • OSHA training

In addition to Lake Area Tech’s specialized training for businesses, Lake Area Technical Institute offers the Build Dakota Scholarship program. The program was created through a $50 million dollar investment in South Dakota’s workforce funded by a generous $25 million donation from T.Denny Sanford and a $25 million contribution by Gov. Dennis Daugaard from the South Dakota Future Fund.

The full-ride Build Dakota Scholarship is awarded to students entering high-need workforce programs at South Dakota’s four technical schools (Lake Area Tech, Mitchell Tech, Southeast Tech and Western Dakota Tech). Programs eligible include Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Operator, Energy Technology, Building Trades, Medical Lab Tech, Nursing, Precision Machining, Robotics/Electronics Technology and Welding. The scholarships are designed to help fill the state’s high demand careers in those fields with skilled technical professionals. Mount Marty College offers a variety of two and four year degree programs in both traditional and non-traditional formats at their Watertown campus which is located near the LATI campus. In 2005, the college started a master’s degree program to meet the community’s needs. www.mtmc.edu/watertown/
